The St. Nikolai-Kirche, (Nikolaikirche or St. Nicholas' Church) is the oldest church in Berlin, the capital of Germany. The church is located in the eastern part of central Berlin, the borough of Mitte. The area around the church, bounded by Spandauer Straße, Rathausstraße, the River Spree and Mühlendamm, is known as the Nikolaiviertel 'Nicholas quarter', and is an area of restored mediaeval buildings (in some cases recent imitations). The church was built between 1220 and 1230, and is thus, along with the Church of Our Lady at Alexanderplatz not far away, the oldest church in Berlin.

2Old City Hall (Front during the Fesitival of Lights.) Altes Stadthaus ("Old City Hall"[4]) is a former administrative building in Berlin, currently used by the Senate. It faces the Molkenmarkt and is bound by four roads; Jüdenstraße, Klosterstraße, Parochialstraße, and Stralauer Straße. Designed by Ludwig Hoffmann, chief of construction for the city, it was built in 1902–11 at a cost of 7 million marks (US$1,750,000) to supplement the Rotes Rathaus.
The building has five courtyards and features many sculptures, including 29 allegorical representations of civic virtues and of Greek deities which are mounted on the tower. A Georg Wrba sculpture of a bear, the symbol of Berlin, is located in the central Bärensaal (Bear Hall).

4Old City Hall An imposing external feature of the building is the tower, approximately 80 metres (260 ft) tall,[9] which rises from a square base over the central bay facing Judenstraße. Inspired by those designed by Carl von Gontard for the French and German Cathedrals on the Gendarmenmarkt,[9][10] it consists of a double set of cylinders with encircling columns,.[3] This structure is surmounted by a dome on which a 3.25 metres (10.7 ft) copper sculpture of the goddess Fortuna, by Ignatius Taschner, stands on a gilded globe.[8][11] It was originally intended to show that Berlin "is taking an upward path in its development".
5Old City Hall The tower is also adorned with many sculptures, including vases and 29 representations of the civic virtues and Greek deities[10][12] by Taschner, Josef Rauch, Georg Wrba and William Widemann.

7Former State Mint, Berlin’s former State Mint, built in the 1930s, now operating as a venue for meetings & events.Alte Münze Berlin The relief frieze based on models by Gilly and Schadow from the year 1800 shows scenes of metal and coin making in an antique style. The original of the frieze came after the demolition of the first Münzgebäudes on Werdersche Markt initially to a first new building of the coin on the Niederwallstraße. When this building was demolished for the Reichsbankneubau ( Haus am Werderschen Markt ), the frieze was stored and a copy made for the construction described here. In the 1960s, the Senate of West Berlin received the original of the frieze.
8Ephraim-Palais On the edge of Nikolaiviertel stands the Ephraim-Palais. This beautiful Rococo palace was built in 1766 for Veitel Ephraim, a court jeweler and owner of gold and silver manufactories. The palace was demolished in 1938 to make way for a new bridge. In 1985-1987 it was rebuilt on a plot close to the original site of the palace. Today the building is used for temporary exhibitions.

The church was built between 1220 and 1230, and is thus, along with the Church of Our Lady at Alexanderplatz not far away, the oldest church in Berlin. Nikolaiviertel occupies the area where Berlin was first founded in the early thirteenth century. The neighborhood's narrow and often pedestrianized streets are very popular with tourists. The area, which borders the Spree river, contained some of the oldest buildings in Berlin before it was turned into wasteland at the end of the Second World War.
15Nikolaiviertel After the war Nikolaiviertel became part of East-Berlin. It wasn't until 1979, in the run-up to the 750th anniversary of the city, before reconstruction of the area started.
During the eight-year project, replicas of historic buildings were constructed in an attempt to recreate a historic quarter. It was sometimes scornfully nicknamed 'Honecker's Disneyland' due to the unorthodox way in which the restoration took place. Almost none of the buildings were built at their original location. The result is nonetheless a nice tourist-attracting area with many restaurants and cafés

19Nikolaikirchplatz Nikolaikirchplatz, a small square with a medieval looking fountain known as the Wappenbrunnen (Coat of arms fountain). The fountain was created in 1987 after a design by Gerhard Thieme from 1928. On each side of the octagonal fountain is a relief showing a coat-of-arms. In the middle of the fountain is a column on which a bear statue rests. The bear symbolizes the city of Berlin. The fountain commemorates the founding of the city, hence it is also known as the Gründungsbrunnen (fountain of the founding).
