  DunbrodyShip_15.JPG - The Dunbrody is a three-masted barque built in New Ross in 2001 by New Ross Drydock for the Dunbrody Project, with the financial assistance of the J.F. Kennedy Trust. The Dunbrody is a full-scale recreation of a ship, This Dunbrody is a full-scale sea-going replica of the original Dunbrody, which played a leading part in 19th Century emigration. That Dunbrody was  launched in 1845 and wrecked in 1875.Since May 2001 the replica Dunbrody has been open to visitors at the quayside in New Ross. It allows the visitor to follow in the footsteps of a group of Famine Emigrants bound for New York. Live actors portray the story of the Famine and the forced emigration from Ireland during that time, with graphic details of life on board the emigrant ship.The visit begins with an audio-visual presentation; the visitor is then brought onto the ship. The Visitor Centre also houses a café, shop and the Tourist Office.  There is also a large database, complied in collaboration with the Balch Institute, of emigrants who sailed from England, Ireland, Scotland & Wales in 1800s.
