The large open area between the National Museum of Ireland in Collins Barracks and the Liffey was used as a mass grave after the 1798 rebellion. Scores of "croppies" ( was a derogatory nickname given to Irish rebels during the period of the 1798 rebellion) were dumped and buried here, the number varying from source to source.Croppy (sometimes spelt croppie) was a derogatory nickname given to Irish rebels during the period of the 1798 rebellion.
